Chapter Thirteen

Emma tried to keep up the light-hearted attitude at the table. It wasn’t an easy task as strenuous as the day had been. Keeping up the pretense that their love making the night before had been no more than a mutual diversion was exhausting. Then Artemis’s bombshell about her being the link had obliterated what little control she’d been holding onto. Diving behind the menu as soon as the waitress dropped them on the table, Emma peeked at him over the edge.

His mood swings were swift and unheralded by any obvious changes, she thought trying to figure out what had happened between the time he dropped her at the door and his arrival inside. He’d been almost relaxed and joking with her. Now he surveyed the parking lot as if someone were hiding there.

A chill ran up her spine. She looked out the window as well, but saw nothing unusual. “What’s wrong?” she whispered, leaning across the table.

His gaze met hers, momentarily. “Nothing, why?” Before he even finished speaking, his gaze returned to the parking lot.

“Oh, I don’t know,” she replied. “Maybe because you haven’t stopped looking at the lot for two seconds since we sat down. I thought maybe you saw something suspicious.”

A full minute of silence passed before he turned from the window and picked up his menu. “I thought I did, but it was a false alarm.”

When he didn’t seem inclined to say more, Emma didn’t push. He was a professional and she was sure he would tell her if she needed to know. After their meal arrived, they rehashed the day’s events in hushed voices though no one was sitting close to them.

Emma was finishing the last of her BLT when Artemis pulled out one of the new cell phones he’d purchased and started punching buttons.

“Who are you calling?”

He shook his head. “I’m texting a friend to see if he can check out some of these companies we’re stopping at. I figured I should do it before I started driving again.”

“I thought you said you don’t have any friends,” Emma teased. He rolled his eyes at her teasing.

“He’s more of a contact I’ve used on occasion. Since he isn’t with the agency I don’t have to worry about him being connected with this mess.”

“You really think it could be someone in the FB--”

“On Facebook?” he interrupted. “I highly doubt he’s the Facebook type, honey. He’ll never see the pictures if you post them there.”

For a moment, Emma just stared at him. What was he talking about? As a couple sat down in the booth behind them, she understood. “You’re right. I’ve just gotten so addicted to it myself I think everyone is on it. I’ll get the pictures developed and send him a copy.”

“Sounds like a good plan. I’ll let him know to expect them,” he said, returning to his texting.

Emma knew he wouldn’t talk about it anymore with people around. She would wait and try to get more information out of him once they were back on the road.
